OriginsThe origins date back to 2019, when the Abbey of Rawaseneng began exploring the possibility of establishing a new monastic presence in Ketapang diocese, West Kalimantan.
History
- On 16 November 2019, four monks from Rawaseneng were sent to West Kalimantan to assess a potential site for the future monastery. Following a fifteen-day visit, they returned to Rawaseneng and submitted their findings to the community for further consideration.
- The project entered a more concrete phase in 2022. On 18 May, Dom Gonzaga Rudijat visited Ketapang to finalise discussions concerning the proposed monastic establishment with Mgr. Pius Riana Prapdi, Bishop of Ketapang. During this visit, a former retreat house previously used by the Bishop Emeritus of Ketapang was identified as suitable accommodation for the nascent community. The building was subsequently designated as the provisional residence of the monks, and Dom Gonzaga assigned four monks from Rawaseneng to begin community life there.
- In accordance with the procedures governing new foundations within the Order, the conventual chapter of Rawaseneng examined the proposal to establish a pre-foundation at Penggadungan, in Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan. The proposal received the favourable vote of more than two-thirds of the chapter members, thereby expressing the community’s formal support for the continuation of the undertaking.
- On 13 July 2022, the official inauguration of the pre-foundation was marked by a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Dom Isaac Majoor, Abbot of Koningshoeven and Father Immediate of Rawaseneng, together with Bishop Pius Riana Prapdi and Dom Gonzaga. This occasion marked an important milestone in the development of the new monastic community.
- As the community continued to develop, provision was made for its local governance. On 27 February 2024, Father Athanasius Subarjo, a monk of Rawaseneng, was appointed Superior of the pre-foundation at Penggadungan.
- A further significant step was taken in 2025, when the General Chapter of the Order approved the establishment of St. Maria Penggadungan as a foundation. On 3 December 2025, the community was officially established as a foundation of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance. The occasion was marked by a solemn Eucharistic celebration in the presence of Dom Isaac Majoor, Abbot of Koningshoeven and Father Immediate of Rawaseneng; Mgr. Pius Riana Prapdi, the Bishop of Ketapang; and Dom Gonzaga, Abbot of Rawaseneng and Father Immediate of Ketapang.
