OriginsFounded, according to legend, in 537. Repopulated in 899. Suppressed in 1835. Refounded by San Isidro in 1942; raised to the rank of priory in 1945 and to the rank of abbey in 1948.
History
- 537: Founded, according to legend, during the lifetime of St. Benedict, who allegedly sent monks from Monte Cassino.
- 899: First documental proof of its existence.
- 934: Martyrdom of 200 monks together with their abbot Stephen. All were canonized and are mentioned in the Roman Martyrology for 6 August.
- 1086: Death of St. Sisebut, abbot. He had hosted national hero El Cid in the monastery.
- 1457: Dedication of the gothic church.
- 1502: Entrance in the Saint Benedict Congregation of Valladolid.
- 1835: Suppression of the Benedictine community due to the Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal.
- 1942: Refoundation undertaken by San Isidro de Dueñas Abbey.
- 1950: Solemn celebration of the restoration of the Church.
- 1967: A terrible fire partly destroys the monastery. Its reconstruction took the community several years.
- 2017: The Cistercian community celebrates its 75th anniversary.
