1998: Este programa está redactado por P. Michael Casey OCSO. "Exordium" es destinado a ayudar a las comunidades a reflexionar sobre los valores que inspiraron a nuestros Fundadores, hace 900 años, y aplicar dichos valores a la vida Cisterciense actual. El deseo más íntimo del programa es llegar a comprender mejor los primitivos documentos cistercienses, que describen las intenciones de la empresa: el Exordio Parvo, la Carta de Caridad, y las versiones paralelas de éstas, que se designan con el nombre de Exordium Cistercii y la Summa Carta Caritatis. Estos textos son importantes porque expresan la naturaleza del carisma cisterciense. Junto con la Regla de San Benito y nuestras actuales Constituciones constituyen la imagen esencial de nuestra forma de vida, su espíritu, sus valores y sus observancias más importantes.

Among the proposals accepted by the OCSO General Chapter in 1996 was that of commemorating the ninth Centenary of the foundation of Cîteaux by a program of reflection and study to be done in all the communities. This was entrusted to a specially-elected commission who in turn passed the task to a sub-commission. The members of this sub-commission were: Dom Franziskus de Place, S. Cecilia Aoki, Sr Marie-Pachale Dran, Fr Mariano Ballano and Fr Michael Casey. A reference bibliography was compiled by Dom Franziskus and the writing of the course was entrusted to Fr Michael. The program…is named Exordium; it is both a commemoration of the beginnings of our Order and, it is to be hoped, a source of ongoing renewal on the threshold of a new millennium.
