· Liturgy
August 19 falls on a Sunday this year. In that case: “nihil de Beato Guerrico”, the Ordo states. But it is unfortunate that one cannot liturgically do anything for the 850th anniversary of his death…
A solution is possible!
According to nº 245 of the “General Instructions on the Liturgy of the Hours” of the Roman Rite, “it is permitted to celebrate a votive office of a saint on an ordinary Sunday, “for example at the time of a pilgrimage, on a local feast, or during the external solemnity of a saint”. There is nothing to stop one from using this exception to celebrate an Office of Blessed Guerric (as a feast) on Sunday, August 19 2007, the 850th Anniversary of his death. (If August 20th is a solemnity of Saint Bernard, the Vespers of the Sunday are the First Vespers of the Solemnity of Saint Bernard.)
From another source, nº 374 of the “General Instruction of the Roman Missal”, it says: “in cases of serious need or pastoral advantage, at the direction of the diocesan Bishop or with his permission, an appropriate Mass may be celebrated on any day except solemnities, the Sundays of Advent, Lent and Easter, days within the Octave of Easter, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Soul’s Day), Ash Wednesday and Holy Week.” It would seem that a Mass celebrated for the 850th anniversary of the death of Blessed Guerric would have a particular pastoral meaning for the Cistercians. The diocesan Bishop can authorize this Mass in our Abbeys on that day.
