IV) The Process for the Beatification of Father Franz Pfanner:

Father Georg Lautenschlager, Postulator for the cause of Father Pfanner, founder of the Missionaries of Mariannhill has informed us that the process for the Beatification of Father Franz Pfanner which was begun in 1962 has been taken to the diocesan level in Durban, South Africa, in 2003.

Father Pfanner was born in 1825. He was a diocesan priest in Vorarlberg, Austria, when he entered Mariawald. He was part of the foundation of Marija Zvijezda (Bosnia) where he was Superior from 1869 until 1880. With 30 monks he left Bosnia and founded Mariannhill in South Africa. Father Pfanner became the first abbot of the monastery in 1885. In view of the situation and the missionary context of the country, the monasteries founded in Zwaziland, in Lesotho, in Botswana included schools and the founding of a religious community for nuns, the Missionary Sisters if the Precious Blood (CPS). The monasteries were separated from the Order in 1908. Father Pfanner, after his resignation in 1892, lived as a hermit at the Mission, “Emmaüs” in South Africa until his death in 1909. He was buried at Mariannhill, the mother house of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill (CMM).
