ús PENALVA (N.-D. de Paraiso). From the 2nd until the 14th of October at the monastery of Tre Fontane in Rome a seminar of formation for the new Superiors was held for the Spanish speaking superiors. It was entitled : The Abbatial Service Today. Pastoral and Canonical Aspects. The requirement to be a participant was to have received the service of superior after the MGM of Lourdes. There were 14 superiors in the group, monks and nuns. The session was the first of three that are planned. There will be analogous sessions, one for the French speaking superiors and the other for the English speaking superiors.
There were twelve different themes offered during the seminar. The presenters were all members of the Order.1. M. Danièle Levrard, a member of the Abbot General's Counsel, opened the seminar presenting in a condensed form during two sessions, the most recent essential legislative documents of the Order. M. Danièle gave an explanation of the material that was both detailed and clear. She presented the life that each of the documents bring to the communities even though the means is within the apparent coldness of the law.
2. Dom Gonzalo Fernandez, Abbot of Frattocchie, also gave us two sessions speaking on the Abbatial Ministry and Governance, based on the Constitutions and Statutes 33 to 35. His references to the Rule, the Ratio and the vade mecum for abbots and abbesses enriched the themes that were presented with much unction.
3. Two themes were developed by Dom Augustine Roberts, abbot of Azul (Argentine), in a language that was frugal and profound. One part treated the necessity and methods of consultation that are given in our Constitutions number 36 to 38: consultation of the Brothers (Sisters), the Conventual Chapter and the Abbot's Council. In the other part, Dom Augustine treated a topic that is always delicate, that is the separation from the community (Constitutions and Statutes 59 - 66). The technical elements and the pastoral attention are two aspects that all the superiors should know and join with the most subtle prudence and deepest wisdom in these situations.
4. Dom Santiago Fidel Ordoñez, a member of the Abbot General's Council, gave an approach to the theme of the Abbot as Teacher. He wonderfully presented all the potential offered on the theme in the Ratio Institutionis. The riches found there are abundant, as we were shown. Dom Santiago's method and his capacity to synthesis assisted in making a vast and difficult topic clear.
5. The abbot and abbess as administrators (Constitutions and Statutes 41 to 44 and the Statute on Temporal Administration) were the themes treated for almost two days by Father Emmanuel Noguchi, of the Monastery of Phare, (Japan). His mastery of the subject joined with his good humor and the novelty of his Spanish with a Japanese accent, contributed to making an abstract topic very interesting and attractive.
6. Dom Salvador Toro, Prior of Sobrado and one of the oldest superiors still actively in charge of a Community, was invited to treat two themes in part because of his long experience. The two topics were "The Father Immediate and the Regular Visitation" and "The General Chapter and the Central Commissions". Being shown the humane and pastoral aspects of these four permanent structures of the Order gave a contribution that was very enriching and very useful for understanding the service of authority.
7. With a presentation almost each day, Dom Bernardo Olivera developed the theme of Spiritual Accompaniment, a subject considered very important at the level of ecclesial life and monastic life. Several years ago there was a similar movement with regard to lectio divina. It is to be hoped that in the near future what once happened for lectio will now happen for spiritual accompaniment, that the leading role it enjoyed during monasticism's finer moments soon will be reappropriated. The human warmth and availability of Dom Bernardo, as well as his personal experience in this arena, put the finishing touches on a theme of great spiritual beauty.
There were various Pastoral Exchanges, some with Dom Augustine, others with Dom Salvador, with the Abbot General, with the Council of the Abbot General; there was festive meal with the Community of Tre Fontane who welcomed us so fraternally and a joyous meal with the community of the Generalate at Viale Africa when we visited Dom Bernardo. All of these various elements were a part of the seminar, a time of serious work rich with learning and fraternal support.
