INFORMATION BULLETIN 146
December 2002
Note regarding the current Ordo
1) Documents from the recent MGM
At the end of November you were sent a copy of the “Minutes” of the recent MGM. The monasteries of nuns received a second copy which is for the Chaplain. To avoid unnecessary costs, another copy of the “House Reports” has not been sent since each superior received one at the Chapter. If any of the Communities wish another copy, they may ask the Secretariat of the Generalate.
The booklet of the “Acts” of the General Chapters and of the MGM 2002 is in the process of being edited. At the beginning of the New Year, each Community will receive the booklet of the “Acts” with the forms to be completed for the Relatio Annualis.
Very soon the Elenchus will be printed with the information given for the book of statistics and with the corrections given by each community. For that reason the usual corrections of the various numbers and addresses of the communities are not found in this number of the Bulletin. All the recent corrections will be available in the soon to be published 2003 edition of the Elenchus.

3) A note from Dom Marie-Gérard (La Trappe) regarding the current Ordo
“Regarding the liturgical calendar, one can notice remarkable changes simply by comparing one year to the preceding year. Some new memorials have been introduced; the memorial of St. Jeanne de Chantal has been moved from the 12th of December to the 12th of August so that the Christians of the Americas can celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe…
Actually our Cistercian calendar approved in 1974 is based on the Roman calendar with some proper celebrations added and some modifications which were allowed (for example the 29th of September…). Our calendar should follow the evolutions of the Roman calendar. A decree of the Congregation of Divine Worship of the 18th December, 2001, introduced some modifications which we should adopt. The same regarding the decision the Pope made at the time of the canonization of Padre Pio, that his obligatory memorial would be celebrated on the 23rd of September.
I will take advantage of this opportunity to offer a point often forgotten by our Communities regarding our two patronal celebrations that of the 26th of January for the Founders of Citeaux and St. Bernard on the 20th of August. At the time when the particular calendars of the Religious Congregations were being formulated, the Holy See had stipulated each Congregation could include only one patronal celebration. We were able to obtain permission to have two since it was inconceivable not include St. Benedict as a solemnity. We were left free to choose either the 26th of January or the 20th of August. The Liturgy Commission was not willing to choose between the two and left it to each Community to make its own determination. The indication in the Ordo says that one cannot celebrate both these days either as a solemnity or as a feast, but only one or the other (one can vary the celebration from one year to the next, for example when one falls on a Sunday, it is better for that year to choose it as a solemnity otherwise it would be simply suppressed that year). One must tell the whole story, the Order of Citeaux is able to celebrate both days as solemnities; and we cannot be stopped from taking advantage of the “communication of privileges” between the two Orders and so celebrate both solemnities. In the mean time the Congregation of Divine Worship can be explicitly asked for the permission to be able to celebrate the two days as solemnities.”
